Events: National Psychotherapy with Men Conference

Along with co-organizers Dr. David Shepard (President Elect of Division 51) and Dr. Rebekah Smart, I am excited to announce that the 4th Psychotherapy with Men Conference will be held on Saturday June 7, 2014 at California State University, Fullerton (that is in sunny and pleasant Orange County). This has become a big event for Division 51 after three successful conferences in Northridge, CA (2008), Austin, TX (2010), and NYC (2012).  This event is held every two years with an emphasis on supporting the healthy lives of all boys and men by promoting best clinical practices and increasing mental health treatment accessibility for boys and men.

Programming for the conference includes:

  • Opening keynote by Judith V.  Jordan, PhD., Director of the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute at the Wellesley Centers for Women. She will explore the application of Relational Cultural Theory for work with men in her keynote Raising Boys to Be Competent and Connected Men.
  • Afternoon keynote address by Fredric Rabinowtiz, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Redlands. A former President of Division 51 with a long history of involvement in the division, Fred will reflect upon his vast experience of men’s lives in his keynote Deepening Psychotherapy with Men: Stories, Metaphors, & Road Trips.

Breakout programming for the conference addresses different presenting concerns, the range of identities of men, and different modalities of working/connecting with men. Attendees will also be able to attend three breakout session during the day. Scheduled programming includes:

And if that was not enough, conference registration will include lunch, coffee/ snacks during the day, an after conference social, guaranteed sunny and beautiful weather, and continuing education credits. There will even be a full day experiential retreat for graduate students on June 5. We are cognizant of keeping conference costs reasonable for everyone since we want you to come, so registration and hotel costs will be low, and there are 3 major airports near by.  As you can see, we are planning a unique conference that shows what Division 51 is all about. This is an event to bring in new D51 members and also to solidify and expand relationships with existing D51 members and supporters. The website for the conference provides information on the keynote speakers, presenters, presentations, and schedule of events. It is being updated weekly. For more information on the conference please visit our website at: http://boysandmencenter.fullerton.edu/mensconference/index.htm

Conference registration will open in early 2014, and I will send a reminder to this list when it is open. Until then, if you have any questions, please email me directly at .

Be well and take good care,

Matt
